Massage gadgets have been around for ages, but these babies are extra WHOA-worthy because of their super antique and steampunk-esque designs. Despite the fact that these gadgets resemble torture instruments or mad scientist tools, they served one function and one function only: to provide the masses with a relaxing sensation that only a massage can generate.
The gadget that resembled a set of binoculars was meant to massage the eyes based on the belief that massaging the eyes was necessary in order to maintain strong vision and a healthy ocular nerve. The suction of the eye cups along with the vibrations of the gadget combined to give users “good eye sight”. (Obviously they were blind to the fact that they look ridiculous while using this device). Other massagers, such as the Dr. Macaura’s Pusocon (the brass body with the rubberized extension) was a simple hand-cranked massager that was used to relax tense muscles. The vibrating plate goes over the “tense” body area while the crank is turned to deliver gentle vibrations to the site.
