Merel Slootheer, Liat Azulay and Pieter Frank de Jong are the brains behind this collaborative bicycle project, F/P/M – Feats Per Minute. With backgrounds in graphics, illustration and industrial design, the team aimed to transform a 30-year-old Alpina bicycle into something awesome – enter the Record-playing Bike. The unit features recycled parts from salvaged vertical record players, but the best part about this project is how “simple” the technology is – the entire bicycle is powered by the kinetic energy that results from pedaling (well, and a nine volt battery that helps to power the amplifier).
The music changes according to the speed of the bicycle rider – the faster the bicycle travels, the more upbeat the tempo is. When traveling at about 60 BPMs, soft ballad music plays from the amp, once the rider kicks up the speed to 120 BPM, disco music blares from the bicycle, until finally, at 170-300 BPM, the electronic house music kicks in. This musical machinery might just make exercising fun.
