You aren’t the only one who will do a double take when you walk in the room thanks to the Self Shelf – a sturdy floating shelf designed to look like a book. Designed by Holland-based artists, Nicole Van Schouwenburg with input from Irene Klinkenberg, the Self Shelf makes for a fun and easy way to display and store a small collection of books (maximum 4kg or albs), and a great space-saving option too. The shelf attaches to the wall with an “invisible” bracket (much like any other floating shelf). The Self Shelf’s fake book spine is cleverly titled “Ceci n’est pas un livre” which literally translates to “This is not a book”; but wait, the hilarity continues…for those of you who are well-versed in modern art history, you will recall Rene Magritte’s famous painting of a pipe entitled, “Ceci n’est pas une pipe” (“This is not a pipe”) that was commenting on the fact that the art itself was not a pipe, it was merely a painting of a pipe – a challenge to the notion of classical art where realistic rendering was deemed more valuable than artistic interpretation.
The shelf comes in three different colour options and three sizes (novel, pocket and cookery). The Self Shelf is not only a cool way to display books, but it’s reference to modern art ideals make it super WHOA-worthy.
