Artist Joe Black is known for his incredible mosaic-style works using unconventional materials. This particular work of art features an image of soldier that is a famous photograph taken by Robert Capa from the Sino Japanese War. Black has used 5,500 spray painted toy soldiers to create this work, each piece carefully placed to create a realistic appearance of the subject’s face when viewed at a distance. The piece is playfully titled “Made in China”, a commentary on the subject’s nationality, and also the toy soldiers which were mass produced in China. We love the colourful nature of the painted soldiers and the realistic effect Black was able to achieve – a job well done!
