Tom French’s latest collection of paintings entitled “Don’t Look Back” is a doozy, and for good reason. The acrylic works of art depict figures (usually, couples) that seem to be happy and in love, but the arrangement of the subjects creates the illusion of a foreboding skull. To add to the creepy-o-meter, French’s works are all in black and white, giving the imagery a certain type of nostalgic and eerie feel – as if the people in the painting are memories happy times, but the overall illusion of the skull suggests that the seemingly happy memories are not so happy after all. The process involved in creating the skull images is quite impressive and calls for an incredible amount of foresight and vision – what came first? The chicken, or the egg? Errr…we mean, the couples, or the skull? Bravo, French.
