CONGRATULATIONS goes out to @rumbaldo for entering this incredible (and totally horrific) video of people eating squid that “dances” once it comes into contact with soy sauce into the WHOA giveaway contest! @rumbaldo has won one of four pairs of artisan salt and pepper shakers from DRPD in London!
This particular dish of squid is a delicacy in Japan called Odori-don or “Dancing Squid Bowl. Despite popular belief, the squid is NOT alive – the squid may be raw (uncooked) but it is no longer living. Richard Fan recorded the above video on a visit to Hokkaido’s Ikkatei Tabiji restaurant and explains that sodium in the soy causes neurons to fire, making the muscles twitch as they contract. A contracting muscle resembles a moving muscle – usually something that a most diners do not want to see before ‘digging in’. And no, the squid is not actually a zombie, but, like, WHOA – it sure acts like one.
THE CONTEST ISN’T OVER, FOLKS. You too can jump around your room screaming, “Winner, winner, chicken dinner!” if you submit now for the chance to win the prize for Sept 19 – 25th 2011. Only submissions provided for each weekly contest will be in the running to win (no previous submissions count). Contest ends September 30th, that means there are 2 more sets of prizes to be won. Good luck, thanks to all the fabulous submissions so far.
