Crazy Bubble Gum Illusion Art In Venice

Luxembourger artist Simone Decker created a provocative art installation of small-scale bubble gum wads positioned throughout Venice, Italy and photographed in a way that the gum wads appear to be large sculptural works. Th collection was called “Chewing in Venice 1 & 2″ and was created in 1999 – it’s an oldie by this time, but still a goodie. As said by the artist herself, “The chewing-gum objects only become sculptures that fill squares and lanes by virtue of the fact that they are photographed right in front of the lens.” Well, Decker sure did have us fooled – upon first glance we were certain this images were the result of a photographed installation of large-format sculptures. We are pleasantly surprised by the illusion she was able to achieve in her photographs, but also slightly disappointed that there weren’t jumbo gum bubbles in the streets of Venice. Oh well, maybe next time?
