Cool Electrical Tower Design Built In The Human Likeness

Kudos go out to American architecture firm, Choi+Shine Architects, for this innovative and fun design concept featuring 30-metre tall electricity towers that are shaped like human figures. The project, entitled Land of Giants, was awarded the 2010 Boston Society of Architects Unbuilt Architecture Award for its unique conceptual approach to power solutions in the Icelandic landscape. The Land of Giants design also received an honourable mention at the Icelandic High-Voltage Electrical Pylon International Design Competition, and placed as a finalist in The 36th Annual Ken Roberts Memorial Delineation Competition.

The towers are intended to work the same way as the typical electrical towers do – they conduct electricity and supply it to the masses in a community, except, finally, the electrical towers are not the eye-sores everyone hates to see in the background. These works of art include several designs of the human figure – both genders are shown moving, a metaphor for the electrical currents that they provide to “move” and power a city. As stated by the architects themselves, “the design transforms mundane electrical pylons into statues on the Icelandic landscape by making only small alterations to the existing pylon design.” Well put, and well done.
