Art Made From Thousands Of Words

NY-based artist Meg Hitchcock has created a wonderful series of art works all based on words. Words, letters and phrases have been taken from religious and spiritual texts to form the beautiful graphic works of art you see here. The artists claims to “deconstruct the word of God by cutting letters from sacred writings and rearranging them to form a passage from another holy book. For instance, Hitchcock may “cut letters from the Bible and reassemble them as a passage from the Koran, or use letters cut from the Torah to recreate an ancient Tantric text.” Not only do we love the visual impact of her textual works, but we loved the meaning behind words from opposing religious groups being rearranged to mean something different that is incredibly important to another religious group. Hitchcock feels the need to create her art in an attempt to find a connection with something greater than oneself, and the labour-intensive aspect of her work is a meditation practice as well as a personal form of devotion. On her website, Hitchcock shares the following:

“My long history in evangelical Christianity formed my core beliefs about God and transcendence, and continues to influence my creative work. I am no longer a Christian, and vehemently eschew all religious leanings. However, I have great respect for an individual’s spiritual beliefs and experiences, and my work is a celebration of that sacred experience.”
